The History of Water Jet Cutting
High-pressure water cutting machine has been used to cut things ever since the mid-1800s. New Zealand and Soviet Union coal miners were the ones using high-pressure water to remove coal and debris that was already loose.
However, it wasn’t until the 1930s that the technique became more known, due to the apparition of cutting devices that used water jets. Basically, it began being more of a thing when a machine was invented – a machine that was able to cut a horizontally moving sheet of paper. The machine was developed by the Paper Patents Company. But these were made for paper, so the pressure wasn’t as high as it can be nowadays.
Developments continued, and in the 1940s, these machines could be used for automotive hydraulics and aviation. Then, in the 1950s, a machine using 100,000 psi was able to cut harder materials such as stainless steel, and it was developed by Billie Schwacha. Later, Dr. Norman Franz, a forestry engineer, showed that harder materials could be cut with abrasive jets, as he tried cutting trees to lumber.
The mid-60s was a time when the shape of waterjet nozzles was into development by G.L. Walker and S.J Leach. Then, the 70s marked the period when waterjet cutting systems were available commercially, due to the invention of crystal waterjet orifices. The system was able to operate at 60,000 PSI.
Then, at the end of the 1980s, a type of development using a mix of tubes was made, in order to help them resist the pressure of waterjets. Ever since the units were always in development to help create what we have today.
